SIBO – Signs and Symptoms

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS and SYMPTOMS OF SIBO

Studies show that the most likely cause of your Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. SIBO is not an infection, but rather a migration of normal colonic bacteria back into the small intestine where they do not belong, causing the symptoms of IBS.

What are the major symptoms of SIBO? There are five.

  1. Abdominal bloating or distension, often with pain or discomfort
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Constipation
  4. Excessive Gas or belching
  5. Acid Reflux or heartburn

OTHER SIGNS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE SIBO

  • Fiber seems to worsen your constipation
  • Your IBS symptoms improve when taking antibiotics
  • You have more gas and bloating when taking probiotics that contain prebiotics
  • Your celiac disease or gluten intolerance is not 100% resolved with a gluten free diet
  • You experience gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation after taking pain medications like opiates
  • Blood tests show that you have low iron or ferritin with no known cause.
